" My name is Callum and I am currently studying for my A-levels in my home county of Leicestershire. I’ve always had a keen interest in sport as well as a passion for aviation. Thanks to my parents, who kindly funded my first ten flying lessons, really gave me the boost that I needed to take my first steps into a career in aviation. My thanks go out to LEBC and the STEM network who put me in touch with Sam Read, a current Commercial Airline Pilot, who has been giving me guidance along my journey to becoming a Pilot. Like many STEM Ambassadors he kindly gives up his time to come and talk with me, as well as regularly emailing. Of course I would never have met Sam if it wasn’t for the LEBC who teamed up with my school to provide regular careers fairs and open talks. Alongside studying full time and part time work commitments, I have recently completed my first solo flight, and I am now flying solo on various exercises and nearing the end of the course towards completing my license. Last week I was able to meet Sam for lunch after flying circuits at East Midlands Airport, just as Sam had landed from Cyprus.
Finally, I would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved in the STEM network and LEBC, and especially Samantha White, the careers adviser at my secondary school, for all of her help organising careers events as well as giving me a way of staying in touch with Sam after leaving school.
