What's it all about?
A Young Apprenticeship
is a great way of getting a taste of ‘real work' in a supported way, whilst still studying towards your core subjects at school.  It's an opportunity to find out what it's really like in the workplace before making decisions about your future.

The programme is available in some schools, as an option in Year 9 and involves spending on average 2 days per week throughout Years 10 and 11, working towards a Young Apprenticeship.  The remaining 3 days per week you will study towards your core GCSE subjects; Maths, English, Science (Double Award) and ICT.  This all takes place during normal school term time.

The programme is designed for able interested and well motivated students with good behaviour and attendance records.  It suits those who are attracted to a more practical style of learning involving time spent in a work setting.  You will be based in school but during the two days a week you spend on the Young Apprenticeship programme you'll work towards vocational qualifications.  These will be taught through a combination of classroom delivery, training provision (sometimes off site) and direct experience of work.  You will also pursue broader enrichment activities and enterprise education to give you an understanding of business in a wider context. This may include visits, trips, enterprise days, workshops etc.

Beyond the programme
When you complete your Young Apprenticeship programme you will receive a nationally recognised completion certificate which can lead to all sorts of progression opportunities.  You can take on a fulltime apprenticeship or you can stay on at school and follow an academic route into work or higher education.  The idea is to encourage you to keep your options open.  The programme will give you the knowledge and experience to make informed decisions about what career path to follow.  You will have also gained valuable social skills needed for the workplace which will be an added bonus when applying for work or further education.

To see if the Young Apprenticeship programme is offered in your school or college please contact your Careers Adviser or tutor.
