Right to Read - does it make a difference?

A marked improvement has been seen in the reading assessments of most of the children on the 'Right to Read' programme.  This clearly could be due to a number of reading initiatives running alongside the curriculum but Head teachers and literacy co-ordinators in schools have specifically cited 'Right to Read' as having a significant impact on the reading of many pupils.

  • Teachers have particularly commented on the benefit to children in terms of their confidence and ability to participate more in class.

  • Children have generally shown a greater interest in reading.

  • The child's ability to discuss the books and relate to the text has been commented on by many teachers.

  • Most teachers have noticed an improvement in the child's ability to communicate with adults as a result of individual time with an adult.

  • An increased ability to understand the text on a different level - to 'read between the lines' as they read a story. This is a valuable literacy skill.

  • Volunteers have generally said how much they enjoy the experience.

  • Volunteers feel that they are making a difference. Most volunteers claim to observe the difference for themselves.

This programme has been a great success.  Reading scores, received for over 850 children in the summer 2008, reveal:

  • For the city and the county 92% of the children involved in 'Right to Read' made reasonable to excellent progress
