Diplomas = Fresh opportunities for employer support

Employers linking with education will be an essential part of the new Diploma qualifications introduced into schools in September 2008. A gradual phasing in will result in 17 Diploma subjects, based on employment sectors, becoming available across the country by 2013.

Developed for 14 to 19-year-olds, Diplomas offer a mixture of classroom learning, creative thinking and hands-on experience. The Sector Skills Councils have been involved in their development in order to bridge the skills gap employers feel exists between a student’s academic study and its application in the workplace. Students will be able to move to University, Further Education or directly into the workplace with this qualification.

Businesses can offer to support by:
• Contributing a real work scenario to enrich a classroom resource.
• Enriching the curriculum through talks and preentations.
• Setting business problems to challenge students.
• Providing resources, equipment and use of premises.
• Offering work experience placements for students.
• Offering a placement for a teacher to experience the busiiness setting of their subject.

To link with education please contact your local Education Business Parternship through the National Education Business Partnership Network at www.nebpn.org./regions.htm.
