Kit out our carers

Students studying a Young Apprenticeship course in Health and Social Care at Rushey Mead School recently took part in a challenging activity to design uniforms for care workers. The activity was organised by Leicestershire Education Business Company (LEBC) and was supported by volunteers from the care industry.

Across two afternoons, 16 students with the support of 6 voluntary care ambassadors, were set the challenge to design, create and model a uniform for a specific role in the care sector. The focus was on the design element with the students putting together a portfolio to justify each aspect of their uniform along with its design. The frantic activity resulted in a presentation on the catwalk in the school hall.

Volunteers, Madhu Parmar and Thomasena Shaw from the County Adult Social Care Service based at Leicester Royal Infirmary commented:
”It was wonderful to be part of this initiative with students whilst they are still in education. As Care Ambassadors we need more events like this one to take place for students, helping to make them aware of the opportunities available in the working world. One very positive thing was the enthusiasm and energy which was put into the project and it was great to see the students working together.”

This activity encouraged the students to think about a different aspect of care work and the demands it brings. LEBC organise similar events in schools across the city and county. If your company would like to be involved with engaging with young people in school to increase their awareness of the working world please contact Virginia Toon at LEBC on 0116 240 7000.
