Constructing a way forward for students

Wates Construction, who nationally employ over 2,000 people, recently hosted a visit from Clare Madigan, a Careers Co-ordinator at The City of Leicester College to their site in Corby where they are constructing the new Corby Academy. Clare’s aim was to gain an insight into the employment of women into the construction industry.

Gary Hall, Operation Director at Wates Construction, commented on the experience: "Construction does have a reputation for being male dominated but it's great to be able to demonstrate that it isn't the case. There are plenty of opportunities for women within Wates across a wide range of roles and having Clare onsite will ensure students are aware of these."

Clare spent the day on the site discussing issues with Health and Safety advisors, surveyors and the Operations Director, building a picture of inclusion and equal opportunities. Trish Kennedy, Kelly Robson and various colleagues from Wates Construction gave fantastic input throughout the day, detailing their roles and development within the company.

Clare commented on her placement experience: “Meeting a wide variety of people in different job areas within the industry was incredibly valuable. An opportunity to discuss careers for women in construction, with successful female role models was excellent primary research. Finding out routes of entry and progression within the industry will also help me to direct students the best way. This experience will ensure our students get the best advice on their future career choices.”

The careers awareness programme for students in school will now be better informed ensuring the students consider the best options for their interests, skills and abilities and don’t make misjudgements through incorrect perceptions.

Teacher Placements into business are one of many initiatives Leicestershire Education Business Company (LEBC) organises to contribute to students being better prepared for their future working life. Rachael Clarke, Project Co-ordinator at LEBC commented: “To ensure our young people are well informed and equipped to make the right choices, teachers need experiences like this and it’s important for their own professional development. Business also gains through a deeper understanding of the current changes in education.”
