Teachers look at plastic design

21st July 2010

Chris Davies, who is Leicestershire’s lead for the new Diploma in Manufacturing and Product Design and design teacher Jonathan Sidgwick from The Robert Smyth School in Market Harborough were given a tour of the site and spent time with members of staff for them to understand their job roles.

After the placement Chris commented: “The day was very useful for us as teachers because it put a practical relevance to the theory that we teach to the students. We got a fascinating insight into the relationship between the designer and the customer that will put our design and make theory into a practical case study.”
Shelley Jones-Fenleigh, Marketing Director/Company Secretary said: “The placement day at Invicta, has I am sure, raised the teachers’ knowledge of design and manufacturing and the high standards of skills that lie within Invicta. Such an insight will allow the teachers to pass on this knowledge of the real working environment to their students.”

Odette Wells from Leicestershire Education Business Company (LEBC) who arranged for the placement to take place said: “We are very grateful to Invicta Plastics for kindly agreeing to host a visit which enabled the teachers, not only to learn more about the valuable work undertaken by this organisation, but to explore the working environment relating to their subject to ensure students are well prepared as our future workforce.”

Placing teachers in a business is one of many initiatives LEBC organise to contribute to students being better prepared for their future working life. This academic year 90 teachers from city and county schools have undertaken a placement in industry to learn more about the world of work.

To discuss how your company or organisation could host a visit from a teacher and enrich young people’s learning please contact Odette Wells at LEBC on (0116) 240 7000 or email odette.wells@leics-ebc.org.uk.
