Introduction

Business in the Community is a national body of over 700 of the UK's top companies who are committed to a positive impact on society.  The purpose is to inspire, challenge, engage and support business in continually improving its positive impact on society.  An independent business-led charity with over 20 years experience.  Membership provides a unique platform for action and dialogue to address key challenges facing business and society, as well as an opportunity to connect with our network of international partners.

Cares, a Business in the Community initiative, is a business led national employee volunteering programme.  Locally known as Leicestershire Cares, employees give their time and skills to their local communities.  A diverse range of programmes are offered, giving networking opportunities, sharing best practice, community insight visits, benchmarking, team challenges and private consultation.

Education

• Right to Read  - a literacy support programme for primary schools.  Led in Leicestershire by LEBC, please see more under LEBC/Right to Read.
• Go for Reading - a literacy support in secondary schools.
• Number Partners - a numeracy support in primary schools and financial literacy in secondary schools.
• Partners in Leadership - A national scheme pairing Headteachers with business leaders in partnerships that tackle issues relating to leadership and management.
• Mentored work placements - working with disaffected pupils to enable them to reach their full potential.
• Interview Techniques - preparing pupils for their first interviews through one to one practice.
• Speakers - raising aspirations by talking about work.
• Partnering a school - a whole school approach to address a multiplicity of need, matching the requirements of the schools with the talents and abilities of the organisation.

Community Support

• Team Challenges - providing charities and community organisations with practical help from a team of voluntees, such a painting and decorating, creating outdoor areas or organising events.
• ProHelp - Pro-bono support for charities and community organisations.

Community Safety

• Mentored Work Placements - Ex-offenders and those at risk of offending need help to be brought back into society;.  Mentored work placments contribute to community safety and a fresh start for individuals.
