It’s been a busy term for LEBC’s School Events team!

It’s been a busy term for LEBC’s School Events team. In recent months, the team have hosted 76 school events across Leicester and Leicestershire, each event is designed to provide young people with impactful careers education, and to boost the school’s careers curriculum. Each event creates encounters between young people and local employers and professional individuals from a variety of sectors, enabling employers to drive visibility of their industry and business to the future generation and workforce. Together LEBC and our employer partners who support our work are shaping the future workforce.

LEBC’s School Events team have covered some miles too this term! The team have hosted events across 33 different schools across Leicester and Leicestershire, with the support of 461 volunteers.

Events ranged from Mock Interviews, Raising Awareness of Apprenticeships, Careers Talks, University Taster Days, Business & Enterprise Challenges to World of Work Industry Visits.

This term LEBC, with the support of local employers invited students to visit 13 different businesses to experience the world of work. Students were able to visit the sector that most interested them, to learn of the different types of job roles available and the routes into the careers they are considering. Students were able to choose from the following World of Work days, Creative Arts, Law, Healthcare, Hospitality, Retail, Performing Arts, Public Services, Sport & Leisure, Business & Finance and Engineering & Construction. Employers such as the NHS, Fosse Park Retail Park, Curve Theatre, Natwest Bank, Wilten Construction, Wagamama’s, Baker Hughes, Showcase Cinema, Leicester Tigers, Nandos, RAF Wittering, Novotel and DMU opened their doors, to provide the students with an insight into their working day and hosted activities to get students practically involved and solving real-life work challenges.

Students shared their feedback about the industry visits raising their aspirations and raising their awareness of different opportunities available within specific sectors.

“The event was very helpful, it made me realise there’s many different paths for me to take and it made me feel more inspired”.

“This event has opened my mind to all the different opportunities”.

“It was a chance to meet new people and learn about their experiences and what their jobs involves and how they got their qualifications”.

As well as World of Work events, the team facilitated the Unbox Your Future project for the first time this year. In essence ‘Unbox your Future’ saw LEBC facilitate 5 schools to engage with a local, and leading employer, and embark on a 4-week careers education programme together. LEBC did what it does best, bridged the gap between young people, schools and colleges and employers. Students were introduced to a business, and set a business challenge by the employer, the students then visited the employer’s premises and presented back their business pitch and presentation. The programme provided students with a unique and inspirational opportunity to solve a real-life work problem and put what they learn in school into action in the workplace. Importantly, the students were able to visit the employer’s site, to gain insight into workplace and learn of local career opportunities. Students were set challenges such as designing menus for patients in hospital, create new and innovative ideas to increase customers visiting shopping centres and create Health and Wellbeing packages for staff. Employers such as the NHS, Haymarket Shopping Centre, Santander and Gailford Try partnered with LEBC to host the impactful project with students.
