3M Bespoke Work Experience Case Study

In July 2018 3M offered A Level students, keen to explore a career within Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths, the chance to gain work experience. Nine students took part in a four day work placement helping them to explore the different careers available within a science-based technology company.

The year 12 students, all in their first year of post-16 studies, were welcomed at 3M’s Loughborough site, which includes a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility and global research and development centre of excellence in drug delivery systems.

3M put together an exciting mix of observation and hands-on activities over the four day placement, giving the students the chance to gain valuable insight into many different scientific, technical and engineering disciplines, as well as sales and marketing functions. Students had the opportunity to meet 3M employees, including apprentices, and learn about the different career paths available within a large multi-national company.

3M is a global science-based technology company applying science and innovation to improve our daily lives. The UK and  Ireland is home to one of the largest 3M subsidiaries outside the USA.

The 3M work experience programme  supports the Government’s aim of tackling the UK’s STEM skills gap as well as giving the company the opportunity to source future talent for its apprenticeship, industrial placement and graduate schemes.

The 3M work experience demonstrated that a wide range of interesting and rewarding careers are open to people with STEM qualifications, helping to support the  students’ decision making about higher education and future career choices. The placement also offered students the opportunity for peer-to-peer networking, building confidence and enhancing communication skills.

Feedback from 2018 work experience students:

“I knew I was interested in chemistry and research and development, this has  reinforced my interest. Before I only knew by reading about careers, now I have seen a real-life working environment.”

“The experience has been very interesting as I had no idea of the different types of jobs that workers do. It has given me an insight into different departments and how they work together. I had a lot of good careers advice as well.”

“I got reassurance that whatever degree I take it will not be restrictive in what  career I take. It has given me more options of what I can do and I realised the  value of apprenticeships.”
