The Young Coders Competition!
The Young Coders Competition will be running once again in 2021 and we would be thrilled if your school or club would like to take part this year!
In case you are not aware, the Young Coders Competition is an initiative for primary schools aimed at helping teachers to become more confident with teaching coding skills. Any teacher can run the competition, whether they are familiar with coding or completely new to it. All the session planning is done for you, so you can learn alongside your pupils. The resources include 12 weeks of lesson planning for absolute beginners (children and teachers!) or a shorter 6 week version for those who already have a little experience with using Scratch. These resources can be used as part of the Computing curriculum in your school or as part of an extracurricular club or may be used by a parent or guardian with their child at home in the event of school closures during the COVID 19 pandemic.
The children are tasked with making a computer application through scratch that aligns with a particular theme – which this year will be “Keeping Yourself and Other Safe”. Teams will need to design a computer game using Scratch that can be used to teach their peers about risk, safety and responsibility. Examples could be how to keep yourself and others from catching coronavirus, safety in or outside the home or how to stay safe online. We’re looking for the children to use their imagination and creativity so the more interesting the better!
Organised collaboratively by the STEM Ambassador Hub East Midlands, the University of Northampton, Canterbury Christ Church University. The STEM Hub & The Worshipful Company of Information Technologists, the competition runs throughout the UK and is free to enter.
