Students design new children’s menu for the NHS

Year 10 students from St Martin’s Catholic Voluntary Academy, have competed in the ‘Unbox Your Future’ project, with their challenge set by staff from the University Hospitals of Leicester, to research and design a new menu for patients.

The challenge took place from March through to the end of April and kicked off with an assembly from NHS staff, followed by visits to the classroom with Q&A sessions, and culminating in the students presenting their solutions at the Leicester Royal Infirmary to a panel of NHS and LEBC staff.

Alongside the challenge itself students were given a rare opportunity to meet staff from various departments including: Midwives, Deputy Chief Nurse, Development Chef, Orthopaedic Consultant and staff from the Training and Development team, to hear about their career journeys and what lead them to achieve success in their roles within the NHS.

A huge thank you to the NHS staff who lead the project and those who spoke as part of the career insight talks. Congratulations to the winning team, who designed a new Children’s Patient Menu, that took into consideration a wide variety of dietary needs and was well presented by members of the team.

The ‘Unbox Your Future’ project is funded by the Careers and Enterprise Company and gives students a taster of a workplace and the opportunity to meet a variety of staff to learn more about the importance of transferable skills and the variety of career options in Leicester+shire.
